Post Post subject: Blyth in swoop to land Swailes
BLYTH Spartans boss Mick Tait has replaced another negative with a positive as the revolving door at Croft Park finally saw a new face walk into the club.

Veteran Gateshead-born central defender Chris Swailes, 40 in October, has joined the Spartans as a player and No 2 to Tait.

It is a timely breakthrough in the transfer market for Blyth and one that has tempered the loss of giant centre-half Richard Pell and goalkeeper Mark Bell.

Pell has joined Harrogate Town after Blyth declined to get into an auction for their popular defender.

Tait said: “Pell didn’t want to leave Blyth Spartans but was made an offer he couldn’t turn down, and I am very disappointed.

“I wasn’t prepared to be held over a barrel. Pell was the second highest player at the club and his performances didn’t justify an increase, especially taking into the account the performances of some of the other players.

“Bell has also moved on and we have now lost four members of the defence, with John Brackstone and Steve Foster also gone.

“However, we conceded a lot of goals last season, so it is maybe no bad thing that there will be a revamp.”

Tait has no qualms over Swailes’ ability to play at least another season and believes the former SPL defender will also be an invaluable member of the backroom staff.

“I played in midfield at the age of 41 in the old Fourth Division as player-manager at Hartlepool United and Swailes has also looked after himself.

“He played the last 10 games of the season for Gateshead in the Blue Square Premier and on the occasions I saw him he was one of the better players.

“He has a wealth of experience, having played for a host of League clubs, including two spells at Ipswich Town, and will lead from the front.”

Tait is also waiting to see whether released Gateshead pair Wayne Phillips and Phil Cave will join Blyth, although Phillips is believed to have agreed terms at Harrogate.

Former Northern Ireland Under 32 and 21 international Wayne Buchanan, meanwhile, will link up with Blyth in pre-season after failing to break through at Gateshead.

The 28-year-old centre- back spent six years in the Northern Ireland Premiership with Lisburn Distillery before playing briefly in Australia.

“Buchanan has a good CV,” said Tait. “He wasn’t match fit when he joined Gateshead in mid-season but is keen to join Blyth and he’ll be given the chance to impress.”

Anyone else enthused by this 'positive' signing of a 40 year old ex-gateshead journeyman?

Me neither

Don't be to upset with the signing of Swailes. He was solid as a rock alongside Curtis in the second half of the season and wil do job in the short term for you. As said by S.S he reads the game well and is a no nonsense type of defender, dont expect any ';Bring the ball out of defence and ping a seventy yard pass' stuff, but expect the player and ball to be in the stand! That type of player! Shocked

Replaced a negative with a positive eh?

They're good aren't they.

Im properly excited now and cant wait for next season now the massive air of negativity has been resolved by us getting an assistant manager in.Heady times.

Pity weve got no fucking players to manage like.

Nowt like giving people a chance or the benefit of doubt prior to witnessing their qualities.

He's played at a higher level than most of your previous managers and players, how old was Maldini(And that was a bit higher than BSN).

It’s nothing to do with giving someone a chance or the benefit of the doubt. I’m sure we all wish him the very best.

It’s more in the grand scheme of things of who has come in and who has gone out. As it stands, we have a right to be a little worried/pissed off/unexcited.

Fair one, be plent players looking for clubs over the next two weeks and don't forget Swailes has played almost every division in England and the SPL so I'm sure his Blackberry is fully loaded.

i know there were a few eyebrows raised by you lot when this signing was made, but i've heard he's been great for you in the friendlies!

Never had any doubt he would be. Forget his age, he reads the game well and is just what you need in the BSN, a no-nonsense authority at the back.

It will come as no surprise to you now that a lot of the Heed wanted him to stay on. Whether as a player/coach/reserve team coach etc.

Cave ain't bad either, just a little gaffe prone every now and then out of the blue.

I doubt anyone would be brave enough to boo him off the pitch anyway! Laughing

Me for one had raised eyebrows when Spartans signed someone months younger than myself but make no mistake about it Swailes is a class act. I was talking to a Rangers fan the other week and he was saying when Swailes played for Hamilton against Rangers and Celtic he was easily the best player on the pitch. Gatesheads loss is our gain and another piece of quality business by Mick. Lets see what other rabbits he pulls out the hat before the season starts.
