Concur with the `fat one` |
who's printing shite like?
shirley supporters of any club have an opinion(s) on players and also how they feel the club is run, they always have and always will.
people are simply just wondering what the crack is. |

If true, regardless of the reason (clubs decision, cheeks decision, other factors, whatever…), he will be a massive loss to the club and it will take some player to fill those boots.
Baz, what’s the crack with your youngin’?

Blue Square Bet North club Blyth Spartans’ captain Gareth Williams is being courted by Northern League side Whitley Bay.
This year’s FA Vase winners are reportedly interested in signing the defender who has played over 400 games for Blyth in the past ten years.
Spartans manager Mick Tait, however, is keen to hold on to the player.
“Whitley have put in seven days notice of approach for Cheeks [Williams] and I expect he’ll talk to them but I don’t want him to go. I’ve told him he’s still part of my plans for next season” he said.
“I’ve given him the go ahead to play for them in friendlies next week. I wouldn’t normally have done that but I wanted to give him the respect he deserves after his ten years of service at Croft Park. I just hope he realises the difference in levels between the Northern League and Blue Square North and wants to stay with us.” |

At least the club has come out and been open about it, rather than leaving everything in the dark.

Indeed, frustrating when something is going on but the club don't say anything about it even though we know it's happening. Whether it's a happy truth or an unhappy one we may as well know about it.

Cheeks has not been enjoying his football as of late, he thinks that the spark is missing from the dressing room. Definitley not Unibond days!!!!
He has definitely not gone at the moment and is playing friendlies with Whitley Bay before he decides what to do.
IF he goes, it is his decision and not the club's
If anybody is interested Whitley are playing Darlo Monday 7.00 ko.
I'll be there to try and find out what is happening.

I thought that Cheeks would finish his career at Blyth and join the coaching staff then maybe go on to manage the team.
IMO the EC should pull out all the stops to keep him here. I don't think that a pay rise would make him change his mind if he decided to go, but if they said that they would put him through the EUFA B licence that may do the trick ( depending on the cost).
At least Mick and the EC should have talks with him to see if anything can be worked out if they want him to stay.
You can all do your part if he comes along on Tuesday, he is approachable so let him know you want him to stay

It is the least that the Exec can do Baz, After 10 years of service with Blyth he should be treat with respect, and a testimonial should be arranged a.s.a.p.

Players come and go,clubs will go on,and if Cheeks wants a fresh start then fair enough. The lad doesn't owe Blyth Spartans a thing.
He's still got years left as a player and skipper and I think the team would miss him badly,so Cheeks stay man.You are Blyth and you'd miss it regardless of what Whitley has to offer.
If,as Baz has said, money isn't his motivation, and the idea of a scouting/coaching role is what he's looking at,the board should give that some thought.A Spartans legend committing his future and efforts to the improvement of the club...great PR for them and a great opportunity for Cheeks even though he still has some good years yet as skipper.

Well this could be the age old thing of football. Do you want a team that has a great spirit and the players have a laugh win some lose some. Or do you get better players and try and get the best team you can. These players might not be from the area and have travelling to do and might not be as outgoing so you lose the dressing room banter.
I know it would probably be better if we had the Gildeas, Brownie, Leeson, Snowdon etc back but we would never winn nowt with them but have a good laugh with them.
Now we are getting a team that can play football and battle we have looked better this pre season than any other so it is the devil and the deep blue see lark.
And for anyone i never said you were talking shite i said don't lets start talking shite.
So which one would the fans want all the players having a laugh and going to Malaga etc or a team of individuals but win something.

Remember the legendary JC telling me that he thought Cheeks wouldn't be at Croft Park for long as he was convinced that he had a career at a higher level. That obviously didn't happen but anyone would look back on a 10 year spell at any club with great pride. The promotion season and the Cup run being the standouts in terms of achievement.
He deserves the right to decide what he wants to do, we all think that he should stay because we still think he has a lot to offer. However on a personal note I think that once the doubt creeps in, once you begin to question your role you are right to move on. Go with your first instincts, Whitley is a great place to end a career with a great manager and the prospect of further medals and you get to eat your tea at home on a Saturday rather than being stuck on a bus for 4 or 5 hours.
My personal worry in all of this is if he goes we lose another starting XI player, replacing him, Pell and presumably Tadge will not be easy. There are no guarantees with anyone you sign in that respect, they have to learn about the club, the way we play, the league in which we play etc etc. A case of starting over again and again.

Bloody kids eh Baz, just no pleasing some....
Leading out the Spartans for a live F.A.Cup 3rd Round tie against Premiership opposition at Croft Park !
Seriously, echo what everybody has said hope he stays, you don't get many defenders with his pace and with Swailes & Buchanan you get the impression Cheeks 'sweeping' skills could be needed against pacy forwards.
Normally the manager states he wants you to stay and you have already signed CN registrations for the coming season would have been enough...
BUT the fact that he is having to actually think about, let alone training & playing for them makes you suspect his mind could be partly made up.
And's it's not the first time Whitley have made an approach, apparently the other summer they wanted him but he decided to stay.
Cheeks doesn't need the supporters to tell him what they think of him, he knows he's highly thought of by Blyth supporters.
Definitely sounds like he's at the crossroads, whatever road he goes down he will go down as a Blyth Spartans AFC legend.

Inclined to agree, when you need to convince some one to stay who has been here ten years already then I think the battle is already lost. He couldn't be held in any higher regards by anyone here so I think the best thing any of us can do is just hope he convinces himself to stay.
Whitley have been very keen to get him back for a while now and is always likely to be his destination if he leaves us. But as baz said, would be nice if he stayed here, took his coaching badges and someday became manager.
Whatever his decision we need to get his testimonial sorted asap. It's never easy to get good crowd attracting opposition to Croft Park but it's not easy to play here for ten years through a lot of difficult times either.

Howay man Williams get a grip...
Play at the highest level you can for as long as you can is what i say. Nowt wrong with Whitley but where's the challenge? Home for your tea on a night and all that but even I can't manage that after home games!
It s not like he can't cut it. Solid last season surrounded by a few disappointments in my opinion.
If he does go then good luck to the lad, owes Spartans nowt.

Me and scummer discussed this in length over a few beers and a curry last night and we made a decision for him.
He is staying.
